May updates and Memorial Day Memories!

The past month was an extremely busy time for Matt and I. With the end of school, birthdays and holidays it seemed like before we knew it May had passed us by and we were already beginning June. Still just to keep our friends and family that live around the globe in on whats going on in our little families lives I would like to post some updates about what we have been up to for the last 30 days or so.

I officially finished my Practicum semester at U.K and will begin my Student Teaching semester this fall, which means that graduation is only 6 short months away!!  Though it can be a little overwhelming to think about Matt and I are both really looking forward to all the changes that will be taking place in our family come this winter and spring season! Until then though I have been keeping busy by spending my days with two of the most amazing kids in town. Finding the family that I am nannying for this summer really was such a huge blessing. It literally was given to me by God and has been one of the many life experiences where His provision has shown up in situations that others would say seemed impossible. But as we know nothing is impossible with Him and when you are in tune with His will He will provide what you need to follow the path He’s set out for you. I have also started studying for The Praxis II exam so that I will be certified when I graduate! I plan on taking, and passing, the exam this summer so that it’s one less thing that we have to think about when the rush of graduation gets here. I also got to gain some extra experience in the classroom by spending some time with my cooperating teacher and her wonderful class of kindergarteners on their last couple days of school as well as substitute teach for various schools in the Fayette County School District.

End of the week Ice Cream treat!

My May Baby turned 24 years old on May Day, or May 1st for those who are not familiar with the holiday. To celebrate one of the most important days of the year, to me, the day my hubby came into existence I figured I’d try and get creative and give him 24 different presents.. 1 present for every hour of his 24th birthday. For the most part these presents were just small sentimental things, like some homemade cookies for him to take to work, a sweet note in the morning telling how much he means to me, or a mini derby birthday pie since that was what he had been hankering for. I have found that those are the best type of gifts because it shows how much time you spend to get to know that person and what they like or dislike. I had also been saving up my personal money for months on end to buy Matt a grill for this summer. God was so good and truly blessed my patience and perseverance in savings, because when it came time to make the big purchase I was able to find a great deal on a close out Kenmore Stainless Steel grill, plus I was able to buy the floor model which meant that not only did we get a better price but it already came installed!

Of course I wasn’t the only person who wanted to celebrate my sweet hubby’s day of birth so the following weekend we went home to have a birthday dinner at the farm with both sides of the family. It was so wonderful to get to spend time with everyone and celebrate how Matt has added volumes to each of our lives and families. MomPom made Matts favorite dish, Chicken Divine, in honor of him, which was absolutely delicious and was well worth the extra calories that are expended on it every year 🙂 Then for dessert I was given the privilege of making his birthday cake, which just happened to be the first cake that I had ever attempted to make from scratch! Coincidentally we were celebrating the same night as the Kentucky Derby. So to go along with the theme, and in good Kentucky tradition, I figured I’d try and make a Kentucky Derby Cake, which turned out to be a pretty big hit! I also decorated Matt’s cake with 24 candles that were lined up to make the number 24 on the top of his cake.

24 candles arranged to make a #24 on the top of Matt's cake... little fun fact, next year I will have to buy two packs of candles for his 25th birthday because the store only sells them in sets of 24 lol

Toward the end of the summer we spent out Memorial Day Weekend camping, fishing and hiking at Rough River Dam in Rough River, Kentucky with family. It was the official Pomeroy Family Memorial Day Weekend Campout! We had such a great time cooking and sharing meals together, talking and telling one another our different hope and dreams, and just being in nature together! This was the first time that Matt and I had ever been camping together. We got to see a new side of one another and enjoy the experience of learning new things about what makes us, us! Coincidentally we found a new hobby together and are really looking forward to various back pack camping trips we have planned with each other as well as some amazing friends of ours! We are both true believers in always keeping current with your spouse, which means never thinking that you know everything there is to know about each other because there is always something new to learn and appreciate about your partner; and it definitely helps to keep the relationship interesting and fresh!

The rest of the month was just filled with enjoying each others company during the ins’ and outs’ of everyday life. We got to try out a fun little ice cream shop in the heart of downtown Lexington, KY with some wonderful friends of ours, called Savv’s Chill, and Matt would tell you that he highly recommends their Bourbon Ball Ice Cream lol. We also have been enjoying having dinner together again every night and really appreciating the time that we get to spend with one another during the week. Hope your summer is shaping up to be as fun filled and memorable as ours is in the Pomeroy house!

Exercising Your Faith Muscle

As Matt and I were on our way to the airport this morning, about to leave of a long weekend trip to visit his grandpa in Tucson, Arizona, there was a message that came on the radio that was right up our alley. The radio personnel was speaking on faith and what it means to truly put all your trust in God. This had been on our heart all week long as we were flying standby to our destination, which means that we can fly for a fraction of the cost but are not guaranteed a seat unless the plane is not full. For most people this uncertainty can cause a sense of insecurity, which leads to worrying, which leads to unneeded extra stress, which is not exactly what the average person envisions their traveling experience to be; Mr. Pomeroy and I included. What we heard on the radio helped to bring true morale to our faith in our God this morning. Faith is not about asking God for something and then getting pouty and upset when it doesn’t pan out your way. Neither is it is asking for something but not truly believing that He has the power to do it, just because it logistically looks impossible. Faith is having a need and asking God for it, knowing that no matter what the odds are He can bring it to pass because He is the almighty God that controls the entire universe!!! Likewise faith is believing and trusting, with all your being, that whatever happens, whether it be what you would like or not, that God’s judgment is far better than your own, and therefore being alright with whatever His final call is on the situation. Knowing that there was a reason for it, that you may or may not understand, but in the end His call was the best possible solution and outcome for that particular situation.  There is so much freedom when you can truly let go of the issue in your life, whether it be something like boarding a standby flight to Arizona or something larger, and give it to God. I know that sounds cliché and is said a lot ,but that’s only because its’ the truth. Yes, we need to do our due diligence, but then we need to hand over the reigns to our Heavenly Father, and let Him take control because after all He is in the drivers seat. So many people are baffled by the fact that Matt and I can travel this way. Even some of our own family members have coined a saying for us for when we travel which is “It’ll all work out.” because we are always saying it, but that’s only because we are growing our faith muscle in God and it really will all work out the way that He plans it to. So speak your faith in Him into existence by prayer, then give it to God and have faith in whatever His ultimate plan may be, whether it goes the way you had asked for or not. Start by doing this with the littlest of things and watch your faith build as you see Him work in the unexpected, beautiful ways that He does, until you find yourself trusting Him for everything in your life, both the big and the small, both the logistically possible and the mind boggling miraculous.

P.S. For the friends and family that we had enlisted to pray the 3 S’s with our family this last week, Matt and I did end up making it to Tucson, AZ safe and sound.. with not even as much as a bump in the plan. We even got to sit together the entire way. Yes, our God is SO good!.. but He would still have been just a good whether the trip had turned out this way or a different way. :)

Heart Songs

A little fact about me that many people don’t know, unless you went to high school with me or lived with me in one point of my life or another, is that I am actually a pretty musical person, thanks to my dad and mom who used to sing my sister, Paige, and I to sleep every night. My dad is a great singer, which is a gift that he passed down to my sister and I, and really taught us to value the lyrics of a song just by listening to them.. which is something that I hope to pass onto my children as well. Because of this the lyrics of songs have a real impact on me. They have always been a way for me to find expression for things that I am feeling or thinking that I can’t quite put into words, so much so that I can literally remember specific seasons of my life based on songs that I connected with at the time. As of late there have been many lyrics I have been finding myself connect with from many different artists and genres.. some Christian artists, some secular.. and some that I’m really not sure what their stance is. I don’t know who these songs were written for or what the artists specifically meant when they wrote each one, but I do know what I hear when I listen to them and  who I sing each one to in my own heart.  Listed below are the ones that have been on my heart the most frequently for the last couple months or so. Some of them are brand new and some of them are older.. but they all have messages of  truth and encouragement that speak to me in their own way for unique reasons.

Bethel Music – My Dear:  I need to say what my soul is singing.. I need to say what my heart is screaming.. that I love you my dear! Every time I listen to this song I hear just how much God loves me and who He knows me to be.. the true me. He thinks that I am ravishing. That all it takes is just one glimpse and He is completely captivated by me and everything He has called me out to be.. everything He’s created me to be. That I am enough just the way I am..I’m everything He ever wanted and needed me to be!! It reminds me of the way that I am supposed to see myself… that I am to view myself in the way that He views me. It reminds me that He could NEVER forget me.. that He is coming for me because I am His.. and He is mine! He is faithful now and will be for all my days.. he will never change his mind about me, no matter what happens.. I will always be His dear that He loves!

The Afters – Every Good Thing: This song makes me remember that every wonderful, aw- inspiring thing comes from above, both the big and the little things. All of it is from THE giver of goodness.. God. This life is His gift to me and it is beautiful.. even my heartaches in life He make beautiful. It reminds me that I need to stay present and engaged in the moments and people that are put in front of me so that I don’t miss what has been given to me.. so that it doesn’t pass me by.  When I sing it I can’t help but have a heart overwhelmed with gratefulness for all that He has done in my life and is still doing with in me!

Dara Maclean – Wanted:   Before I was even born God had me in His mind and He had my life already mapped out! Therefore I was always meant to be.. because God doesn’t make mistakes! He had this very time and place chosen specifically for me to live so that I could show His love to those who I come in contact with through the story He has given me! God has marked me and set me apart.. He has my name tattooed on the inside of His palm!! So I don’t have to search for where I belong because I have found it in His arms.. in His love. I have always been wanted by Him and so are You!

Mumford and Sons – Wait:  There has been a lot of waiting going on in this season of life for Matt and I.. which is not always easy, but what has been proven to me time and time again is that Gods timing is never too late or too early. So I will kneel down, wait for now… and know my ground..and I will wait.. I will wait for you,Lord.

Mercy Me – You Are I Am:  My Husband showed me this song a couple weeks ago and ever since it has stuck with me because of the truth in it. I can’t speak for everyone but I know I have been the one who felt that I was too far out of Gods’ reach.. the one to doubt His love and wonder if He was even there.. if He would even be enough. I have been the one to fall apart and question who He really is. But something amazing happened in those moments where my hurt lead me to shear, raw honesty with God.. I was healed and this song reminds me of that! It reminds me that God will show up every time! That He wants a real relationship with me through His son Jesus Christ and that means He wants to me to tell Him my real feelings, and thoughts.. He wants my truthfulness.. He wants my heart. It reminds me that nothing I can say is too big for God.. that He can handle anything, and that He will prove Himself to me every time because He lives in me through His Holy Spirit and therefore will call me out to be what He has created me to be.. to live the way that He has created me to live.. in total love and freedom with Him, because after all, He is the Great I Am!

Us and Our Daughters – Honey:  We’ve come such a long long way and I’m not gonna stop what we’ve started.. but I saw it in your eyes today.. a little tired, a little dishearted. But honey, honey, honey hold me tight! Until the morning, morning, morning and it’s light. I think that we’ll be fine.. I think that we’ll be fine. I am inspired by this husband and wife team! They make beautiful music with honest lyrics that are so relatable and uplifting especially when Matt and I are going through something difficult where God is growing us individually as well as in our marriage. It’s just refreshing to listen to a song and know the people who are singing it have been where you are. That they are writing from their own life experiences, from what they have learned and walked through together in their own marriage, so that it can be used as a tool of encouragement to support and lift up others… it’s just beautiful to me. I’m sure that Matt and I have had different growing pains then they have, but to know that they went through something that made them feel the same way I have felt and that they were brought through it and made stronger because of it fills me with such trust and hope. It also just makes me thankful for everything that we have come through and how we have been changed for the better. We’ve had our share of highlights and heartaches but I really wouldn’t change one thing about our story.. not even the smallest detail.. because it was written by God and therefore fits us perfectly.

Jonathan Thulin – Dead Come to Life: I am the living dead.. you are the opposite. We’re like fire and ice, only one can survive. My will’s departed. Light is in your eyes reaching to mine. I am a valley of bones, covered in stone.. nothing more than human. Into the unknown body and soul, your calling me good.. only with you the dead come to life!  When I am caught in the crossfires of life and I am paralyzed by my own fear God will hear me when I call out to Him and come to my aid.. He will protect me.  He will quench my thirst for Him.. He will breath life into me and all that I do.. if I only seek Him… each day He will bring me to life, just as He’s been faithful to do the day before because I have accepted the gift of eternal life that He gave me through His son, Jesus, which is the key to becoming truly alive.

Hope you found encouragement from the songs that I shared and how they are being used by God to speak into my life, bringing peace and redemption to my soul.

Much Love,

Blair

National Donut Day!!

The sky was full of fog and there was a slight chill in the air as I was driving to work at 7:00 am yesterday morning. The forecast had called for rain all day long,  and that’s not exactly what one would think of as the typical  sun drenched day in June. I was listening to the radio as I made my early commute over to the twins home, while I was trying to think of some fun indoor activities that we could do for the day. That’s when the radio personnel announced that it was National Donut Day and that different donut shops around the country would be giving out free donuts to customers all day long. I had never heard of such as thing, but thought it would be something exciting to do with the kids to celebrate our first week together as well as this new found quirky national holiday, and of course, being the cool eight year olds they are, John and Rosalie were all in! Therefore, after swim practice that day we made our way over to Krispy Kreme Donuts in Lexington, KY. I had never been there before and man was it an experience! Of course we were expecting the promised free donuts of our choice, but there was so much more going on as well that added to the atmosphere! Not only were they handing out donuts, but the twins each received a balloon and cute little paper hats that looked exactly like the ones that the staff was wearing! They even had a huge glass window in the parlor where you could watch the donuts being made while you ate! There was a ton of other families and children around all waiting in line for their tasty glazed treats, holding their balloons and fiddling with their own paper hats as well. Everyone was smiling and having a good time together, just enjoying each others company.

We got there just in time to watch the donuts being made!

Later that evening, after I had left the kids for the day and was home just relaxing with Matt after a long, but rewarding, work week, a thought popped into my head. It wasn’t a new thought for me, and I am sure that many others have had this thought before I ever did, but none the less it had reoccured. It’s the little things in life that make it special; that make it sweet, if you will :). It’s the memories made from spontaneous adventures. The moments spent impacting and show love to others that truly bring satisfaction and joy. And the best part is you don’t have to spend a lot of money or be someone of high stature in society, all you need is an open heart and a willingness to be truly present in the moments that have been given to you.
