Since we have been married Matt and I have been fortunate enough to go and visit with our grandparents, that do not live in Kentucky once a year. Our sole intent for these visits, of course as you may have already guessed, is to spend real quality time since we do not get to see them on a regular basis. For this reason Matt and I decided to spend some of our hard earned vacation time and take a trip out to Tucson, Arizona last weekend, making memories with some of the people that we love most on this Earth. We left early Saturday morning and returned Monday afternoon. We had such a wonderful time getting to catch up with Grandpa, Grandma Phyllis and Aunt Patricia during our visit as well as meet a few of Grandpa and Grandma Phyllis’ close friends in the assisted living home where they stay. It was so refreshing to just soak in all the wisdom that they had gleaned over the years of their lives during the meals we shared together. This time spent laughing and listening to all their stories was definitely one of the sweeter memories from this trip for me. Another thing that I will never forget is the conversation that grandpa and Matt had right before we left to come back home. My love language is very much words of affirmation, followed by quality time, so to hear grandpa speak life and encouragement into my husband by telling him how unbelievably proud he was of the man that Matt had become along with other deeply genuine, loving sentiments touched me on a very personal and intimate level. To be able to see, as his wife, the honor that Matt has brought to his grandfather and family, as well as the fresh confidence that my husband has found in those encouraging, affirming words of admiration and love, is truly priceless! Even as I try to describe now there really are no words that would do, what I had witnessed that night, any justice. It was one of those moments that when it comes you just know will have an impact on the rest of your loved ones life, and therefore your life, influencing it for the better.
The HUGE Cactus that we saw! As a southern girl, who hasn’t been any further West then Texas, is was my first time ever being around such a creation! And yes, for anyone who is wandering the needles on these plants are sharp and they will get stuck to your flowy skirt if you happen to get too close to them. lol
Another first for both of us.. that is Matt with a Dust Devil just to the right of his window.. which is, from what we have been told, basically a tiny tornado that you can see because it has SO much dust around it. Yea we were living on the edge haha…. and yes for those wandering that would be my dainty little footsie making a cameo appearance/photo bomb lol 😉
Grandpa and I with our big sunglasses on after church trying to block out that beautiful but slightly blinding Arizona sunshine!! 🙂
Us four newly weds at the Cincinnati Redlegs vs. Arizona Diamond Backs game. It was over 100 degrees outside but we wouldn’t have known because the stadium was enclosed and therefore was nice and cool, thanks to the air conditioning. 🙂
Normally I am a dye hard Coca-Cola girl but the air was so dry that it sucked the moisture right out of you.. leaving even the most devout consumers having to waver their loyalty.. it might have not been as refreshing as an ice cold Coca-Cola but it sure did quench my thirst lol
My sweetheart and I enjoying the ball game. Our seats were only four rows away from the out field!! It was great even though we didn’t catch any of the fowl balls that flew over head. lol
Matt and Grandma Phillis hanging out
Aunt Patricia and I. She is the sweetest person. Every time she sees me she adderesses me as Mrs. Pomeroy which still makes my heart smile and get all giddy.. then she gives me a big hug and asks me how long Matt and I have been married… literally down to the minute. This was the first trip that I was able to give her the full answer .. which I have a feeling that she was pretty proud of me for 🙂
Three of the greatest guys I know: My brother in-law, WIll, grandpa Pomeroy and of course my hubby 🙂
If you ever wonder where my husband gets his genuinely warm smile from – it’s this wonderful man sitting right next to him! 🙂
Just a few of the grandkids hanging out with grandpa. This is a man that has been richly blessed by raising a big loving family so there a plenty more grandkids that are in toe to come visit him, or have already visited with him this year. All I can say is grandpa is one of those people that it’s just a joy to be around.
Another great surprise that I had during this week was a visit from my sister Paige, who came to stay with us for a couple days after Matt and I came home from our trip. We had some of the best conversations and sister time of the year thus far! It was just so good to spend time with her goofing off, cooking, talking – in person which is WAY better than over the phone or through skype – and having real sister time again. This quality time with her was something that my heart had been yearning for, since being married and living roughly two hours away makes it a little harder to have, then say when we lived in the same town, under the same roof, sharing the same bedroom lol. Kirby-girl even enjoyed all the extra girl time that was taking place in our home, which who would have ever guessed that one haha. I am also, just so thankful to have a husband who is so supportive and encourages these little family visits. Matt really is so gracious when it come s to allowing our loved ones to come down and stay with us, even when it means that his home is going to be filled with more women than it already is and he is going to have to listen to girlie chatter about makeup and such for a couple of days lol. His understanding and willingness to allow this need in my life to be met is just one of the many reasons why I adore my husband through and through. He openly welcomes whoever is staying with us and joins right in on the fun..for the most part.. you mention painting nails though and he’s gone 😉
The three of us ladies when Paige came to visit 🙂
Kirby photo bombing lol
Paige just hanging out with Kirby… and Kirby doing what she does best, being pampered with affection haha
Me and me Kirby-girl cuddling on the couch while Paige and I had a movie night
The end of my week off was filled with more family time as Matt and I thought it would be a great idea for me to go back up to Northern Kentucky for a couple of days so that I could celebrate my momma’s birthday with her on her actual birthday! It was a wonderful visit with her, my sister and Mawmaw and I am so glad that not only was I able to make it up there but that I had my husbands full support, encouragement, understanding and prayers even though he made it clear what a sacrifice it was going to be on his end to allow me to go home while he stayed in Lexington, particularly on his stomach haha. I also got to see my little sister Carrieli off as she left for a conference with her youth group called Forward!! I know that whenever I went on trips with my church or school it always made me feel so loved and supported when my family would come and wish me well. Therefore it was something that I wanted to do to show her that she had my full support and encouragement as she went forth on this venture, and it was well worth it to watch her board the bus and wave good bye even at 4:30 am! 🙂 I also got to spend some great quality time with my Mompom, our family friend Gail and her co-worker Hillary over a lovely breakfast at good ole’ Kracker Barrel after we finished sending Carrieli and the rest of the youth ministry off to Atlanta, Georgia. We got to chat about life and God’s goodness over coffee and pancakes, which in my opinion makes for the best conversations.
As I look back on the memories made this week a simple truth keeps coming to mind, it’s not about the quantity of time that you spend with others.. although there never seems to be enough, it’s more about the quality of that time. It’s more about making the time that you do have to give truly count and filling it with as much richness, love and meaning as possible.
