How To Plan A Babymoon

ba·by·moon – a relaxing or romantic vacation taken by parents-to-be before their baby is born.

We have been on some pretty special getaways during our four and a half years of marriage and all of them hold wonderful memories that are near to our hearts, but two trips we have taken in particular are the most fondest by far. Our Honeymoon and our Babymoon. I don’t know how new the idea of going away as a couple before a baby is born is but I do know that Matt and I both agree, we think it’s just as essential as going on a Honeymoon to begin your marriage. A babymoon is a great way to end one season and begin another of your marriage, parenthood. It’s a great time to go away and relax as you anticipate the start of a new chapter together. It’s a great time to make memories that you can cherish and look back on once your little one arrives. That’s the reason we decided to take a Babymoon before our Annabelle was born and we are so glad that we did. We both agree that it is the best, most romantic trip we have taken together to date. Therefore we thought it would be fun, and helpful, to share some of the things that we feel really made our babymoon so wonderful and memorable. 🙂

HOW TO PLAN A BABYMOON

  • Go Alone – While family trips and fun get aways with friends are nice this is not the time to invite the whole gang.. rather it’s the time for you and your partner to get away just the two of you, before that sweet little baby bump makes you are permanent party of three. So make sure to keep this vacation and all the reservations for a party of two while you still can so you can spend this special time making some really wonderful memories with the person that you love enough to start a family with. The person you love enough to spend the rest of your life with. The person you love enough to create another life with. Because even though parenthood is an incredible adventure filled with so much love and new shared experience for the two of you it won’t be just the two of you (on the outside at least lol) ever again. So cherish this short, but blessed season where you get to enjoy the in between together.

Four years down, lifetime to go :)

Another reason to go alone… you can take as many kissy pictures as you want! 🙂

  • Go somewhere you both find romantic and relaxing – Do you enjoy the beach.. then go with a seaside bungalow for your getaway. Are you more of the mountain loving type.. then make sure to retreat to a secluded cabin  in the woods. You don’t have to have a lot of money or vacation time saved up. Just as long as you’re with your beloved that’s really all that matters. Matt and I once didn’t even go out of the state for our vacation. We were literally an hour or so from home the entire time and we only had enough money and time to take a long weekend together.. but we were together and that is what mattered. That is what made it fun and memorable. So where ever you enjoy being with your sweetheart just go there for as long as you can afford. Being together is what truly counts ❤

We got our toes in the water.. toes in the sand.

This, right here, togetherness is our happy place!! :)

  • Stay in the country – Going outside of the country is fun and exciting, but there is a time and place for everything and when you’re expecting a little one is not the time or place to go crossing countries off your world wide bucket list. Why you may ask? Simple. It’s not something that any expectant couple wants to think about but if there was to be an emergency and you needed to get yourself and the baby to a hospital you want to be in your home country just in case. If you can’t see your doctor then you at least want to be able to speak to and understand the doctor that is helping you. And if you ended up going into labor you want your baby to be born in your home country as well not just because of dual citizenship but also because if you had a baby in another country you would have to go through all the hassle of getting back home with a newborn on top of being newly postpartum.

Seriously look at that water!! The bluest we've even seen!

Who said you had to go to Mexico or the enjoy water this blue?!? We found that Anna Maria Island, Florida was only a day's drive from our home state of Kentucky !

Who said you had to go to Mexico to enjoy water this blue or sand this white?!? We found that Anna Maria Island, Florida was only a day’s drive from our home state of Kentucky and had the bluest, clearest water and whitest sand beaches we had ever seen! Plus it was so secluded! We practically had the beach to ourselves most days.

  • Don’t plan every second, but do plan a lot of down time – Schedules are awesome, but when you’re on vacation it’s best to leave some open room just to sit back, relax and do nothing. Yes that’s right nothing the woman that loves and lives by her planner said it.. nothing. There is something so freeing about not having anywhere to be or anything to do except to just be with your favorite person in the world spending time together. We learned this lesson on our honeymoon when we way overbooked ourselves with stuff to do and by the end of the trip we were exhausted. Vacations are not meant to exhaust you. They are meant to refresh you. So make sure you leave some room for time to unwind and just enjoy each others company. Plus, in a few months that simple pleasure of not having a scheduled day will not be your reality for quite awhile again. So enjoy the simple pleasure of just doing nothing and having no plans except for just being in the presence of your beloved now.

Nothing but the waves, water, an Ice Cold Virgin Pina Colada and my favorite person to sit in next to the ocean in a beach chair with!... oh and a baby bump too of course lol

  • Be spontaneous and do something new together – This is going to seem contradictory to the above point but it actually kind of goes hand in hand with it. During your unscheduled time with your love it is a fun idea to spontaneously decide to do something new and exciting that neither of the two of you have ever done before. So if you find yourself sitting around one morning dreaming over your decaf coffee together and something fun comes up in conversation that you both would like to try then why not look into it. Of course make sure that it’s pregnancy friendly. Obviously this isn’t the time in your lives to go cliff diving or white water rafting but maybe something more mildly spontaneous like going on a lighthouse tour or trying your hand at deep sea fishing? 🙂
On our Kayaking tour through The Florida Mangroves! First time we had both ever been Kayaking or been to the ManGroves! It was such a fun experience! So glad we woke up one morning decided over breakfast to spontaneously do this that day!

  • Indulge in your favorites – It’s vacation and like every good vacation you have to enjoy your favorite treats, especially when you’re expecting because there are so many things that are off limits during this time anyways. So if you have been having a hankering for chocolate cake then make sure to get yourself a slice for dessert one night while your out enjoying dinner. For us this looked like Virgin Pina Colada’s (for Blair) Bourbon and coke (for Matt), Decaf Vanilla Iced Coffees (again for Blair), Homemade Carmel Apples that Matt surprised me with, Fish Taco’s and Key Lime Pie…. and of course our regular DQ stop on the way home. No road trip is complete in the Pomeroy family without a blizzard or two.

  • Sleep in – Even if you are not the type to do this, we can’t stress enough how much you should just put the alarm clock on snooze. Better yet don’t set an alarm clock at all and just let yourself wake up naturally each morning. Again, you’re on vacation and resting is an important part of that. And once you do wake up who says you have to get out of bed?! Take your time just enjoying not having to rush through a morning routine but instead being able to just hangout, cuddle and drink a cup of coffee with your honey, because again in a few months this will not be the norm.. and let’s face the facts.. in the fast paced world we live in today even if you don’t have a newborn or little ones just getting to sleep in till you wake up on your own, enjoy the morning, and taking your time getting out of bed isn’t the norm then either. Trust us, you will not regret it. Just coming home well rested is reason enough to enjoy this simple pleasure together.

Well rested and enjoying our even beach walk together ❤

We hope these tips were helpful in planning your babymoon and that  you enjoy yours and it brings you many cherished memories to reminisce on just like ours did.

Much love & prayer,
Matt & Blair
