Our Old Kentucky Home Tour – Annabelle’s Nursery

img_3578img_3579

Since Annabelle’s room is the only one in our home that is truly complete we figured starting there with this series would be just a good a place as any. That being said this series will probably be quite spread out over the course of years since we have renovations we plan on doing to our home. You know what they say, homeowner ship is a work in progress! It’s a true labor of love. We didn’t want to wait until the entire house is exactly as we would like it to be though because we think there is beauty in progression and change. So we thought we’d start now in sharing those changes with you all and then as the years go by we can share the growth with you as well! πŸ™‚

When we were planning Annabelle’s nursery we knew we wanted the theme of her room to be a fairytale theme, but not in the sense that she would have Β the latest Disney Princess bedding and all but in a more classic, almost antique way. We wanted her room to feel whimsical and dream like – like the way a fairytale does. We wanted it to feel fit for a princess because that’s what she is – Our Princess Sweet P, but in an understated, elegant type of way.

snuggled up during her first week of life in the woven basket her Aunt Jamie gave her, tucked sweetly in her comfy rocking chair in her book nook. ❀

Never did we ever think we would have a pink room in our home. We both much more prefer the neutral look when it comes to home decor and paint colors. It’s just what normally feels homey and inviting to us. And then we found out we were going to have a sweet baby daughter, and even though it’s cliche we both couldn’t imagine anything more perfect for her nursery than that sweet feminine hue. Painting Annabelle’s nursery pink was actually Matt’s idea, even though I was totally on board since it is my favorite color lol. We didn’t want it to be bright, and over powering though. We still wanted the room to feel warm and mellow. We wanted something soft and dainty, just like our Annabelle. That’s why we settled on a little, almost airy, blush color called “Marry me”. The paint chip itself barely looked pink at all but once we did a test run on the wall with the sample paint it was just perfect, especially when the evening light entered through her window. It really gave the color extra warmth. It almost seemed to pick up the suns beams and add a golden tint to it! πŸ˜‰

img_3570

Along with our blush shade of pink we decided to add in accents of antique gold to make her room feel regal as well as a little hint of mint to add a bit of freshness and pop. We then kept the furniture, bedding and drapery simple and chic with cream coloring to make the whole aura of the room feel light and airy, and not too over done.

The real magic for me though of making this fairytale nursery come to life was in all the details! Each piece of Annabelle’s room was lovingly hand picked and designed by the both of us or was in some way or shape tied into our family through the use of heirlooms that had been passed down to her. Such as the antique spice rack her Great-Great-Great Uncle Denny built that we turned into a shelf or the vintage Clinique poster her Great-Nana gave her that we put above her glider in her reader nook.

This special chair was gifted to her by her Great-Grandma Jane. Every time we sit in it we’re reminded of her and how her love was a safe, cozy place for our entire family to call home

The chandelier we found on a close out sale made for the perfect completion, both for Annabelle's room and our pocket book lol Matt did such a great job of installing it! He even added a dimmer switch so we can choose the amount of light we would want to fill her room at any given time, which has really come in handy for all those dream feedings.

We chose drapes that were a simple cream color but they added texture to her room with some tiered ruffles. We hung them on an antique gold rod that had crystal end caps to match the crystal chandelier that hung from the ceiling as well as the crystal lamp that sits on her gold night stand and the little crystal and gold rose tie backs that hold her curtains in place which I’m sure no one has taken note of but without them the room wouldn’t be the same. lol

The little crystal rose tiebacks that hardly anyone ever notices but I love so much!

We added a homemade bed canopy that we concocted out of tulle to drape over her crib making it the main centerpiece of the room. We chose to leave a good amount of extra tulle at the bottom to create a whimsical, billowy feel to it, as if her crib was being surrounded by clouds of white. Then we bought a wooden monogram and spray painted it rose gold, and hung it with a strand of fake pearls in the middle of the canopy to add a regal, feminine touch. We also used strands of fake pearls to tie back her curtains both over her window and in place of the closet doors that we took down.

On that note the reason we decided to take the closet doors out of Annabelle’s room was both functional and design inspired. The closet is located in the corner of her room and to get clothing in and out of it would be a chore to have to move heavy doors from one side to another while trying to get a little one ready. So we decided to replace them with white, ruffle curtains instead to make getting ready in the mornings easier. We also just liked the way the curtains made her closet feel more girly and open, like it was her own little personal dressing station and the mirroring that took place between the curtains on the window and the curtains on the closet really tied the whole room together, and of course felt very classic fairytale lol. Matt did such a great job at completely revamping her closet too! He put in these beautiful white built-in’s for her tiny little wardrobe of sweet girly dresses to hang as well as shelves to store her homemade blankets and quilts that were handmade by loved ones just for her arrival! Annabelle even has a little shoe rack that is just the right size for her 30 pairs of shoes that she already has! The shoes addiction has already began lol And above her closet Matt designed these really sweet little silhouettes of my two favorite disney princesses Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty in mint! We framed them and they hang on either side of a verse (Proverbs 31:25) Β that we also framed to hang over her closet as a reminder to her that true beauty is cultivated from the inside out. ❀

Matt also took the time to refurbish his childhood dresser for Annabelle to use as a changing station. It sits right next to her closet underneath a gallery wall made up of gold frames that her Great-Gram gave us to fill with her newborn photos as well as little sayings and verses that reminded us of her and little sketches and doodles that we drew for her while we were pregnant. ❀

The verse Matt and I dedicated to her when we were pregnant with her. James 1:17 “Every good and perfect gift is from above.” God brought this verse back to our minds from the day we found out we were pregnant with Annabelle all the way to the day she was born and beyond. So it felt only fitting to make a little doodle with it written in the middle and hang it on her wall in her room. ❀

“Though she be but little she is fierce” perfectly describes our sweet girl

Last but not least is her reading nook that is tucked back in the corner of her room. There is a beautiful builtin book shelf that is filled to the brim with all these wonderful books from our baby shower that people who love her and wrote sweet messages in to her so she can read them with us as she grows. Along with her little library also sits a lovely wooden box that some of my best friends from high school gave her as a baby shower gift. Her name is daintily engraved on the top surrounded by sweet little engravings of butterflies and flowers, and inside it is filled with mementos and keepsakes from her pregnancy, birth and now first year of life! And next to Annabelle’s keepsake box is my Mrs. Snuggles, a 26 year old rabbit that used to be white and is now more of a cream color lol that I used as a lovey when I was a little girl and her stuffing is the blanket that I was brought home from the hospital in as a baby.

A built in book shelf filled to the brim with books from so many people who love and care about Annabelle. Definitely our favorite part of reading these treasures is reading the special messages that each person wrote inside for her. ❀

Nestled in the corner next to her books is the most comfy seat in our entire home. Literally we have spent days upon days now in this chair. We have had naptimes, storytimes, day and night time feedings and all night lullaby sessions in this seat and we can both agree that it is by far the largest, plushest, most comfy seat our tushies have ever graced. lol Something that we absolutely love about it is that it is wide enough for both Matt and I to sit in with Annabelle. So every night before she goes to sleep we all three pile into that chair and read a bedtime story to her and then pray over her before putting her to sleep.

So many special mementos fill this little nook, journals, and books and other little things specially made or passed down for our Annabelle by so many people who love her dearly
