Our 5 Year Anniversary Getaway to The Great White North, AKA Canada!

For those of you here who didn’t know (or didn’t already guess based on the title of this post) Matt and I have been married for 5 years as of Friday, August 19, 2016! 5 years of marriage is a pretty big deal, but then again we also think that every day of marriage, and therefore every year of marriage is a pretty big deal and deserves to be celebrated in it’s own right as well! 🙂 When we first got married we started a tradition by going away together to celebrate our anniversary and have been able to keep that tradition alive our entire marriage so far! Sometimes we have went on longer trips and other times we only went away for the weekend. But what has remained the same no matter where we went or what we did was that every year on our anniversary no matter what day of the week it fell on we have been together all day long, and we spent that entire day together just to two of us having fun and enjoying each others presence, because hey, it’s a holiday in our family, it’s the day our family was founded and we were joined as one in God!

So this year to celebrate Matt surprised me with a long weekend getaway, away to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls! We only went for a few nights mainly because we had an 8 month old baby at the time and couldn’t bare to be away from her for longer than a few nights, especially since it was our first time ever being apart from her and she was still nursing exclusively for the most part. Plus, when you have a baby  that young things can change at a moments notice. A little one can get sick or something drastic can happen and in that case we also wanted to be close enough where if we needed to get back we could make it home with in a days drive or less depending on how fast we drove. lol We figured starting slow was the best for everyone in our family because being apart from one another wouldn’t just be a challenge for us but also a challenge for Annabelle. Matt lined up some stellar granddaughter sitters though ( aka our wonderful moms!) who were more than willing to help us celebrate and spend a couple days each with Annabelle spoiling her to their hearts content. Thankfully everything went off without a hitch, even when Annabelle decided to bottle strike a couple days before we left. That’s a whole other story though, again you just never know with little ones what the future holds lol

Our trip began on the morning of Thursday, August 18th. We left right after Annabelle went down for her morning nap and arrived at the Canadian border a few hours before dinner time. Matt booked us a hotel that was literally right across from The Falls so we wouldn’t have to drive but instead could walk to all the attractions we wanted to see since we were right there! He also called ahead to tell the hotel that it was our 5 year anniversary in hopes that they would give us a really great room, which they glad obliged! They upgraded us to a falls view room instead of a city view one. We could literally hear and see the falls roaring from our balcony! It was so amazing, and even cooler in person!

The first night we decided to keep it pretty low key and just went out to dinner and explored the strip, and like any newish parents with an 8 month old baby we went back to our hotel room and slept in as late as we could the next morning… which was until 8 am lol

The 2nd day of our trip was our actual 5 year anniversary, Friday, August 19, 2016. It was kind of a cool coincidence that this year was the first year since our wedding day that our anniversary actually fell on the same day of the week that our actual wedding was on (Friday, August 19, 2011). We decided to get breakfast at Tim Horton’s  since we were in Canada after all. Then we walked down to The Falls and took a ferry ride around the falls on The Hornblower, which is basically The Canadian Version of The Maid of The Mist. Another anniversary tradition that we have is each year Matt and I write vows to one another on the morning of our anniversary and then we read them to one another that day. So while we were on our ferry ride the two of us pulled out our little pieces of paper and renewed our vows to one another, just the two of us under the falls. ❤

After that we went on a tour that took us behind the falls which was really cool because it gave us a totally different vantage point then the ferry ride did.

So funny story, the day we were married 5 years ago God gave us a little morning shower followed by a breathtakingly beautiful rainbow! So it was kind of fittingly sweet for Him to design us another one on the day of our five year anniversary! <3

We ended our anniversary with a fancy dinner at The Skylon Tower’s revolving restaurant! So all in all we got to see Niagara Falls from practically every vantage point that the Canadian side has to offer!

On the morning of our last day Saturday, August 20th, we got up early and decided to end our trip on an adventurous note by going zip lining over the falls together! It was definitely an adrenaline rush for sure!

We had some great talks to and from our old Kentucky Home. Those 3 days were just long enough for us to get away and spend some really great quality time together as a couple without getting too homesick from our baby girl. By the time we got home on Saturday night all three of us were more then ready to be reunited! And a wonderful reunion it truly was!

Much love & prayer,

Matt & Blair
